How To Choose The Right Mop For Your Workplace

How To Choose The Right Mop For Your Workplace

You may think that choosing a mop requires no more thought than simply walking into a store and buying the first mop you see. The trouble is, today, there are so many choices available that even the simplest of tasks can seem highly confusing, so when it comes to choosing the right mops for the workplace, there are a few things you need to consider.

The right workplace mop for you will depend on the type of floors you have, the amount of traffic that uses them, and your hygiene requirements. Choosing the right mop is crucial for the workplace because it directly impacts hygiene standards, safety, operational efficiency, and ultimately, long-term costs.

The Main Types Of Commercial Mops Explained

Commercial mops differ from your average household mop primarily in their durability, size and mopping efficiency as they are designed to handle high-traffic areas with frequent, heavy-duty cleaning, and usually have advanced technologies that improve hygiene standards whilst reducing labour time.

  • Microfibre Flat Mops - these are hygienic and efficient, easily trapping dirt and microbes and are ideal for daily cleaning on quick-drying surfaces like hardwoods and laminate.
  • Traditional String Mops - these are highly absorbent and great for mopping up large spills and vast areas.
  • Dust Mops - also known as dry mops, these are used to dust and remove dry dirt from large areas before wet mopping.
  • Sponge Mops - these are great for cleaning up spills and for cleaning small spaces, as they are highly absorbent and have scrubbing capabilities.
  • Spin Mops - use a centrifuge mechanism to wring out excess water, and leave textured or delicate tiles, or laminate floors, drier and therefore safer to use.

Flat Mops Vs String Mops: Which Is Right For You?

"Use the right tool for the right job" is an age-old idiom that has become a metaphor for efficiency and competence in every field. When it comes to cleaning, you will get better results and more efficient use of time when you choose the most suitable mop for your workplace.

Flat Mops - these are best suited for daily use, especially in areas like offices, as they are ideal for cleaning under furniture, in corners and even up walls or ceilings. Being light and quick to use makes them efficient and easy for the operator, and microfibre pads can be easily replaced rather than being continually dipped back into dirty water. This not only makes them more hygienic but also safer, as they allow floors to dry quickly and reduce the risk of accidents or slipping.

String Mops are best for industrial areas and rough floors as they are designed to handle uneven floors such as concrete found in warehouses, which would otherwise shred microfibre. They are very efficient for scrubbing heavy grime, and they hold more water, so they are better suited for large spills.

The majority of commercial cleaning jobs, like offices, schools and commercial spaces, are better suited to the efficiency and cleanliness that flat mops provide.

Selecting The Right Mop Handle Length And Material

Mop handle materials include aluminium, which is lightweight and rust-resistant and ideal for frequent, wet cleaning. Fibreglass is strong and durable and great for heavy-duty tasks. Stainless steel, which is very durable, tough and resistant to chemicals, but it is heavier to use and may be more difficult for the operator. Then there's wood, which is a sturdy and economical choice, but may break over time or when it's put under too much pressure.

A mop handle length of between 1.35m and 1.5m is ideal for general daily cleaning tasks, and over 1.5m is recommended for larger areas to help reduce back strain.

When And How To Replace Mop Heads

Commercial mop heads should be replaced every 2-3 months, depending on usage, or sooner if they start to show signs of wear and tear, such as fraying, discolouration or reduced absorbency.

Depending on the type of mop you have chosen, you may need to release a clamp, screw or hook-and-loop mechanism on the handle in order to remove the old head and replace it with a new one.
