What is a Commercial Vacuum Cleaner?

A commercial vacuum cleaner is a heavy-duty machine used to clean business places, including offices, retail premises, hospitals and factories. It is specifically designed and manufactured to deal with all the challenges presented by commercial spaces and so differs significantly from domestic models.
Features and Types of Commercial Vacuum Cleaners
When compared to vacuum cleaners for domestic use, commercial versions have a number of differences:
- They give greater performance because, while a domestic machine may be used twice a week in a small space, commercial models are required every day for long periods and over large areas. For these reasons, commercial machines need to have a more powerful motor, use heavy-duty components and generally be more durable than domestic models.
- Cost is always a factor in business so commercial machines need to be energy efficient in use and be able to clean a large area effectively. They must also be reliable and require low maintenance.
- Commercial vacuum cleaners normally have a higher quality filtration system, usually with multiple stages and to HEPA or hospital-grade standards. This is important where good air quality is essential, and the machines are better sealed to prevent the escape of dust.
- Attachments and accessories tend to be larger and more varied to deal with the additional challenges that commercial environments present. These include a large capacity bag to reduce the frequency of emptying.
Because various commercial spaces have different cleaning needs, there are several types of cleaners available:
- Upright cleaners have wide cleaning paths and strong suction and are ideal for large, carpeted areas.
- Canister cleaners are easy to manoeuvre, versatile and powerful, and have a variety of attachments to deal with different surfaces and types of dirt.
- Backpack cleaners are suitable for hard-to-reach places because they are light and portable.
- Floor sweepers remove dust and debris from hard surfaces which can include sports arenas and factories.
- Wet and dry vacuums can deal with liquid spills as well as dry debris.
- Carpet extractors deep clean carpets with hot water and cleaning solution and so can remove embedded stains.
The Most Suitable Vacuum Cleaner for Your Job
Using a domestic vacuum cleaner in commercial premises is rarely a good idea because it is unlikely to have the necessary power, performance and reliability. Conversely, however, a commercial cleaner can be eminently suitable for a large residential property.
